Hold your own wine tasting

World Rhino Day

Ideas

  • Try 4-8 different wines, depending on how much time you want to spend on each. Select a good combination of wines so that you have some variety
  • Cover up the label of each of the bottle of wine you are tasting – you can do this with foil or sticky labels. See if your guests know their pinot from their merlot! Take it turns to taste each wine and guess the variety, and award a small prize for the guest who guesses the most right during the evening
  • Or how about each guest brings their favourite bottle of wine, and has to ‘defend’ their choice. Everyone gets to taste each other’s choices. Make each of your guests a tasting card where they can record their notes about each wine, and at the end of the evening, take a vote on the winner
  • You could add an extra dimension by bringing different cheeses to the party. What makes the best combination?
  • How about asking your local pub if you can hold the wine tasting there, and see if they will donate a few different bottles of wine to taste. In return, you bring customers to their pub! You can also put their name on tickets and emails as another way to say thank you
  • Approach your local wine shop to get some tips, and see if you can get an expert along
  • Tweet and share your event on social media and send info to your local paper to spread the word and get some coverage

Fundraising thoughts

  • You can sell tickets, or ask for a donation on the door of your event
  • If you are asking guests to bring wine to the event, you might prefer not to charge as much for entry. You could charge a smaller donation, “£5 donation and a bottle of wine = entry!” Don’t forget to highlight the cause you are raising money for
  • To make your fundraising have more of an impact, you could source some items for a raffle. Ask your local wine shop if they would be interested in donating a prize
  • Remember to ask for gift aid on any donations (but not on tickets). For every £1 donated, we can claim back an extra 25p from the Government. You can get gift aid forms from Save the Rhino.

Buy your wine from www.thedrinkshop.com

Raise even more money for rhinos by buying Linton Park Wines’ rhino range! Search ‘rhino’ from the homepage to find the UK range.

Thedrinkshop.com stock Rhino Pinotage, Rhino Chardonnay, Rhino Merlot Shiraz, and Rhino Sauvignon Blanc at £6.49 a bottle and 10% of the profits from every bottle goes directly to Save the Rhino International

Brush up on your rhino info

Your event will have more impact if you talk to people about the cause. Rhinos are an endangered species, but do your guests know that nearly 300 rhinos have been killed in South Africa already this year, just for their horn? This is the worst year for rhino poaching since the poaching crisis in the 1980s and it is important now, more than ever, to give generously and take action.

And finally don’t forget to tell us about your event!
