More than 150 rhinos killed in South Africa this year

More than 150 rhinos have been killed in South Africa this year. This is almost double the figure released only a month ago, and almost half of the total number of rhinos killed in the entire of 2010, early on in the current poaching crisis. The rate of poaching incidents is rising at a rapid pace.

Cathy Dean, Director of Save the Rhino International comments:

We welcome the news that the South African government is considering reforms to the issuing of trophy hunting permits from countries that are unable to meet CITES’ requirements, and urge all African rhino range states to speed up prosecutions, increase sentences for rhino poaching and trafficking crimes, and to make more government funding available to tackle the poaching crisis.

  1. This makes me incredibly sad. I wish the people/countries who buy these horns realised the truth, that they are just the same as finger nails and won’t cure anything! Sad thing is I can only see it getting worse the rarer they become. I really hope something is done about this and soon but in all honesty money speaks louder than words they who buy these obviously have loads.. Greed. The great human down fall!

  2. Please stop this already!!!! Do you even realize that if this goes on we will have no more rhino’s by 2014 which is LESS than two years from now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. I don’t understand why people are sooooo dumb to think the horn can cure anything, it just makes me sick, somehow we
have to stop the people from killing of the rhino. If they don’t stop soon the only place you will see one is in a zoo. So sad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. This is madness. How some people can think that rhino horns can cure anything. These animals are special and wothy of protection against these onslauters. Please CITES ,BAN all trades on rhino producs…. God is waching us…

  5. these precious animals are starting to get extinct.
please help these rhinos. they are 20,150 rhinos left in the world.
    this animal must stay alive
    keep all our animals safe
please don’t poach any of our animals
i love animals it makes me feel sad when i hear animals

  6. We have to help these beautiful mammals.this is so sad what human can do to all other creatures all over the world and just for money…human doesn´t care anyting else but himself and that´s why we are in this situation.

  7. Well you cannot just complain on the Internet. I have watched what Charlie Warren has witnessed for over a year. He helps to keep the poachers off in Kruger Park and it is not enough. I am going on the Global March for Elephants and Rhino on Sat 4th Oct 2014 in a city close to me in the UK, AND YOU COULD DO THE SAME IN ONE OF the Capital Cities of the whole world. It really is Global. Go and look it up and join in the march.
