Thank You Rangers: Supporting Those Who Protect Rhinos

Across Africa and Asia, rangers spend long days and nights monitoring rhinos, deterring poaching, and caring for some of the world’s most important and diverse wildlife habitats. Their work is physically demanding, emotionally tough, and absolutely essential for rhino conservation.

Whether walking for hours across rough terrain to track a rhino, or responding to incidents of illegal activity, rangers are critical to creating secure, resilient, and biodiverse environments for rhinos to thrive. They play a vital role in the survival of endangered species and their responsibilities are far-reaching.

Beyond patrols and protection, rangers are often responsible for ecological monitoring, collecting data on rhino populations, tracking other key species, and recording changes in the environment. Many also support scientific research, help manage fires and invasive species, and assist with important procedures and interventions such as dehorning and ear-notching. In many places, rangers are educators and community liaisons, building relationships with local people, sharing knowledge about conservation and strengthening the connections between people and nature.

Today, on World Ranger Day, we want to recognise and thank the dedicated rangers who work tirelessly to protect rhinos and the places they call home. We recently asked supporters to share their messages for rangers and their responses were heartfelt. Here are a few:

“I will be forever grateful for the hard work and dedication of rangers around the world, for playing such an important role in protecting wildlife.”
“Your courage, passion, and daily commitment make a real difference.”
“Thank you for your bravery and commitment, you’re an inspiration to us all.”

Your appreciation and support for rangers goes beyond words. In our recent Step Up For Rangers appeal, you helped raise £21,963 to support rangers on the ground. This funding will help provide essential kit and equipment including boots, jackets, socks, and uniforms, so that rangers can stay safe, comfortable, and prepared for the challenges each day brings. These practical items may seem simple, but in tough conditions and through long days and nights, these small items can make all the difference.

When we have good boots, the right clothes, and something to block the sun, we can do our job better and keep rhinos safe.” Ranger, Namibia

To every ranger: thank you for your commitment, your skill, and the countless hours you dedicate to protecting rhinos and their homes.

And to all of our incredible supporters: thank you for stepping up. Together, we are making an impact for rangers, and for rhinos.
