A new Sumatran rhino has been born!

Rosa and her new calf

On 24 March, Rosa, one of the seven Sumatran rhinos at the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary in Indonesia, gave birth to a beautiful little girl!

After eight miscarriages in recent years, many of us were worried that Rosa would not be able to carry a pregnancy to full term, but we’re delighted to announce this incredible news.

The calf, who hasn’t been named yet (add your ideas to the comments!), is Rosa’s first baby, and also the first calf from Andatu, who was born at the Sanctuary in 2012.

We’re so excited to share this news with you, and more will follow soon – keep an eye on our full blog for all of the details.

  1. Hi, what a wonderful news.
I am so happy and hopefully, slowly, the numbers of Sumatran and Javan rhinos will grow.
That is why I propose to name Rosa’s baby Hope.
Thank you for your incredible hard work.

    Freddy
