Leaving a legacy

Rhinos are currently facing the biggest ever threat to their survival. At current rates of poaching, rhinos could by extinct in the wild by 2026. Save the Rhino International is determined to prevent this from happening, and ensure that these amazing mammals, which have roamed the earth for 50 million years, survive and thrive for the benefit of future generations, ecosystems and local communities.

By remembering Save the Rhino International in your will, you will help to ensure that your children, grandchildren and generations to come are able to see these magnificent and unique creatures in the wild. If you choose to leave a legacy to Save the Rhino, we will:

  • Keep you up to date with rhino news and Save the Rhino International’s activities, with free subscriptions to our magazine, The Horn, as well as our e-zine, RhiNEWS
  • Thank you on a special legacy donors section of our website (if you wish)

How to leave a legacy

There are a number of different options for remembering Save the Rhino in your will, including:

  • residual bequests, when then the remainder of your estate is gifted to Save the Rhino after provisions have been made for your loved ones
  • a percentage of your estate, when a specified proportion of your estate is gifted to Save the Rhino
  • a pecuniary gift, when you specify a certain amount of money to be donated to Save the Rhino in your will
  • a life income plan, involving the establishment of a trust for dependents in which the original investment (the “principal” of the trust) is donated to Save the Rhino after a specific amount of time

All of these options can be incorporated into your will. Once you’ve decided to leave a legacy to Save the Rhino, there are two ways to go about it, the simplest way being to compile a new will. It is best to do this together with an advisor or solicitor. You can find further information on professional advisors via this page on the ‘Remember a Charity’ website. You can simply discuss the nature and amount of the donation you want to leave to Save the Rhino with your advisor, and have this written into your will.

Alternatively, you can amend an existing will via a process known as a Codicil. Codicils can potentially cause problems if you go on to cancel the will to which they apply, as the codicil is not necessarily cancelled automatically. You can read more about codicils and decide the best option for you here.
