Why join Team Rhino for Ride London-Surrey 100 2018?
As the Ride London-Surrey 100 2018 ballot places are now announced, and recruitment for Team Rhino 2018 is in full flow. We take this opportunity to speak to South African native and Save the Rhino International supporter, Chase Franklin, about why he chose to join Team Rhino twice for Ride London-Surrey 100.
Why did you choose to ride for Save the Rhino?
'I'm originally from Durban, South Africa, and the north coast is always a lovely place to spend time in the bush. Hluhluwe is a particular favourite of ours. My wife's close family friend dedicated his life to saving elephants and developed a particularly close relationship with a herd of elephants and it showed that we can help make a difference with Africa's animal. The current crisis South Africa is facing with prolific Rhino poaching, I felt this was my way trying to help the cause to give back a little.'
What would you tell others who were interested in joining Team Rhino for this event?
'I'd ask them if they knew that almost three of these majestic animals are poached each day. Imagine our children growing up and there not being a Big 5 anymore, because humans have wiped them out. It upsets me even having to say that out loud...'
What would be your biggest tip/piece of advice to any cyclist looking to take on Ride 100?
'It's not as daunting as a 100 mile ride sounds. Go in with a smile, enjoy the atmosphere and even if it rains, it’s an awesome day out on the bike for a good cause and great support all across London and Surrey.'
