Comrades Marathon 2014
- South Africa
South Africa’s Comrades Marathon is legendary. The 2014 ultra-marathon, on Sunday 1 June, will be a “down” race of around 89kms from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. Save the Rhino has sent runners twice in recent years. In 2010, we sent two teams each of five people, sharing a rhino costume; eight finished in times of between 11 and 12 hours. In 2013, Vinny O’Neill ran solo in rhino costume, in a blistering 10:38, in a year when 4,000 starters failed to finish due to exceptional heat.
A few UK-based long-time Save the Rhino supporters have signed up for 2014. They haven’t yet decided whether to run in rhino; they may just do it “for fun”. But they could bring a rhino costume with them, if anyone is brave / mad enough to take on the ultimate challenge and run Comrades in rhino. We ask that you raise a minimum £1,000 if borrowing one of our costumes, or £500 if you want to run as part of the Save the Rhino team. You also have to buy your own place in the Comrades, cover any related expenses, and run a qualifying time.
For more information, see the Comrades website – www.comrades.com – and email firstname.lastname@example.org Places tend to go fast; they opened on 1 September and will close on 30 November or whenever 18,000 places have been filled, whichever is the sooner.
