Introduction to the Grumeti Reserves, Tanzania

The Grumeti Reserves (GR), 1500 kms² adjacent to the northwestern border of Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park (Figure 1) forms a vital part of the Serengeti-Mara Ecosystem that is defined by the annual migration – an extraordinary trek of literally millions of wildebeest, zebra and antelope.

Prior to 2002, illegal poaching and uncontrolled legal hunting was an everyday occurrence resulting in diminishing numbers of resident wildlife. This undermined the tourist potential of the reserve and the capability of neighbouring communities sustainably to utilise natural resources.

Since then, Grumeti Community and Wildlife Conservation Fund (GF) has implemented law enforcement, community development and wildlife management policies to boost livelihoods of people and wildlife and, with the establishment of a sustainable commercial tourism operation, profits are returned directly to GF to carry out its work.

The area is varied and diverse holding large stands of riverine, thicket, closed and open woodland habitat as well as more general scrub/grassland and short grass open plains.
