The Michael Hearn Internship Programme

The Michael Hearn Internship Programme has been supported by the Linbury Trust, with additional support from the Ashden Trust, the JJ Charitable Trust and the Mark Leonard Trust.

This Internship Programme, in memory of Michael Hearn, former Research Director of Save the Rhino Trust in Namibia, is aimed at highly motivated school leavers or recent graduates wishing to pursue a career in conservation. The Programme will offer one Intern each year the opportunity to work for Save the Rhino International, a UK-based fundraising conservation charity, as an excellent all-round introduction to the sector. The 9th month will be spent with staff from Save the Rhino Trust in Namibia, one of the field projects supported by SRI.

The first Michael Hearn Intern, Lizzie Whitebread, went on to do a Masters at Imperial College after her year with Save the Rhino International, and is currently in Russia studying Saiga antelope for her thesis. The next Michael Hearn intern, Hannah Grist, is coming to the end of her year, having just spent a month in Namibia working for Save the Rhino Trust, and has achieved great success, personally and for the charity. We want to ensure that the next Intern also makes the most of this opportunity to learn about all aspects of conservation, gaining the specialist experience that will aid them to move on to work within conservation, either in an office environment or in the field.

The application process for the Michael Hearn Internship Programme 2008-9 is now closed.
