On Wednesday 26 May 2010, five black rhinos will be translocated to North Luangwa National Park in Zambia from South Africa. This will complete a founder population of 25 black rhinos. North Luangwa National Park (NLNP) is located
North Luangwa Translocation Programmein the Northern Province of Zambia. The Park covers an area of 4,636 km² and is situated in the mid- to upper Luangwa Valley. Wildlife is widely found, including Cookson's wildebeest, Crawshay's zebra and many antelopes and birds. Elephant numbers have recovered from poaching in the 1970s and 80s. More recently, in 2003, the Zambian Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) and the North Luangwa Conservation Project (NLCP) launched a joint project to re-introduce critically endangered black rhinos into NLNP and build capacity within ZAWA to protect and manage the animals. 20 black rhino have since been re-introduced, and the final five will arrive in 2010. From this founder population, three calves have already been born and a dedicated rhino protection team carries out daily monitoring and protection activities.

To reach its overall goal to maintain the wilderness of NLNP, and the function of the natural ecosystems in surrounding areas, for its intrinsic value and the benefit of people, NLCP is developing and implementing activities in support of sustainable and long-term ecosystem management, and it has recognized the benefits of linking conservation and children.

Through the operation of a targeted Conservation Education Program (CEP), 20 local schools (2,000 pupils) benefit each year from interactive, innovative lessons and supplementing activities that are delivered by a mobile Conservation Education Unit and Officer. The NLCP hopes that by encouraging involvement through conservation education, the next generation of responsible, committed Zambians will work for the sustained conservation of the greater North Luangwa ecosystem. This proposal requests funds for the ongoing operation of the CEP.
